Leadership Learning Networks

Leading Learning in Schools:
The Roles of Principals and
Vice-Principals

As school leaders face the ongoing challenge of managing the diverse expectations on their roles and responsibilities, leading learning must move to the forefront.  This includes “such features as coaching over an extended time, the use of data teams, a focus on how students learn subject matter content, and teachers working collaboratively to plan and monitor lessons based on evidence about how students learn in light of this planning.” Bausmith & Barry 2011. It means deeper involvement in the core business of schooling which is teaching and learning.

Participants will have an opportunity to collaborate with other school leaders and co-construct other areas for exploration.

Areas for exploration may include:

  • Understanding the value of being a learning leader

  • Analyzing how leadership time is used

  • Using time differently by narrowing the focus

  • Using learning focused conversations to improve teacher practice

  • Supporting teachers to use classroom evidence in manageable and effective ways to improve student learning

  • Ensuring quality learning opportunities for teachers and students

  • Creating and implementing collaborative opportunities throughout the school

Instructional Playbooks the Missing Piece to Impactful Coaching

What is an instructional playbook?  “… a concise, precise document that summarizes the essential information about evidence-based teaching strategies that instructional coaches use to support teachers and students. … the heart of a division’s professional development.”

In this network participants will strategically develop the component parts of a playbook creating a table of contents, writing concise one-page descriptors and making checklists that provide a step-by-step implementation pathway. Participants will also explore ways to create professional learning experiences to use with teachers in both the creation and implementation of playbooks.

All participants will receive a copy of The Instructional Playbook: The Missing Link for Translating Research into Practice by Jim Knight/Ann Hoffman/Michelle Harris/Sharon Thomas.
