Identifying and Teaching to Students' Mathematical Gaps
Carole will be returning to Manitoba for a fifth year, working with Grades 1 -8 teachers on Identifying and Teaching to Students’ Mathematical Gaps.
As teachers, we are tasked with meeting the needs of all learners. Our primary classrooms are diverse learning spaces, where students display both a range of mathematical capacity and experience and gaps in key areas of numeracy. The COVID 19 pause has added to the complexity and degree of those gaps across all grades. In this series, Carole will work with grade 1-8 teachers to identify students’ mathematical gaps and then to plan what to do about them, through intentional tasks, engaging questions and meaningful levelled practice for our grades 1-8 learners.
The virtual sessions will provide numeracy background knowledge and specific tasks to use assessing students’ capacity in grades 1-8.

Building Thinking High School Math Classrooms: The Journey Continues
In this network participants will continue delving deeper into how to build a thinking classroom. We will review all 14 practices with specific focus on expanding our practice around the third (flow and consolidation) and fourth (assessment) toolkits. The sessions will make extensive references to, the recently published book, Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics (Grades K-12): 14 Teaching Practices for Enhancing Learning.

Building Thinking High School Math Classrooms
Much of how classrooms look and much of what happens in them today is guided by institutional norms laid down at the inception of an industrial-age model of public education. These norms have enabled a culture of teaching and learning that is often devoid of student thinking. In this series of four workshops, participants will experience some of practices that emerged from over 15 years of research into how teachers can transform their classrooms from a space where students mimic to where students think. The practices discussed will intertwine with, and make extensive references to, the recently published book, Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics (Grades K-12): 14 Teaching Practices for Enhancing Learning.
