Knowledge to Action: Infusing Indigenous Perspectives
Relationships, Stories, and Connection will be the basis for learning and developing practical tools, knowledge, and resources for student learning. Participants will explore the power of relationships in working towards teaching for identity building to establish a culture of learning where every student feels they belong.
Our role as educators to answer the Calls to Action by learning, doing, acting, and sharing is imperative not only for the benefit of Indigenous students, but for all students, and future generations to come. Together, we will unpack the history and resulting effects of colonization we see in Canadian society and in the classroom. This network will equip educators with the knowledge, tools, and strategies to embed Indigenous perspectives in the classroom and explore Indigenous pedagogy and ways of knowing. The sessions will focus on identifying, selecting, and developing appropriate resources, content, and curriculum connections for the grades 5-12 setting. Educators will co-construct action plans in a supportive environment, implement in the classroom, and contribute to a collection of materials developed throughout the network.

Applying the Indigenous Education Policy Framework to the Classroom
In response to the NEW document Mamàhtawisiwin – The Wonder We Are Born With – An Indigenous Education Policy Framework, Mamàhtawisiwin supports the holistic achievements of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit learners by assisting Manitoba educators in incorporating Indigenous pedagogy, languages, and cultures into their teaching and practices.
Participants will:
-
Gain an understanding of the policy framework and reflect on how it supports or challenges their existing belief systems
-
Understand their roles and responsibilities in regards to the framework
Learn how to and then implement ideas, strategies, and processes into their regular classroom practice
The network is designed in such a way that teachers, school leaders/principals, system leaders/superintendents, and Indigenous school division leaders (i.e., Directors, Coordinators, IAA Leads, etc.) can participate in the series.
Note: Indigenous school division leaders and teachers will participate in all sessions. Sessions 1 & 5 will include superintendents and principals.
