Leadership Learning Networks

Those Who've Been Away: Readers and Writers Returning to School

In this 4-part series, we will focus on manageable and effective classroom practices to support the literacy learning of those students in particular who have been absent from our classrooms for extended periods of time.

Consideration will be given to:

  • Assessment - What can these students do as readers and writers?  What knowledge do they have?  What reading and writing strengths do they have?

  • Programming - How can we use these strengths to stretch and grow their skills as readers and writers? What does this programming look like in whole class, small group, and individual literacy experiences throughout the day?

  • Supports - How do we best utilize the supports of the adults in the building to enhance the literacy learning of these students?

  • A Sense of Belonging - How do we best build a welcoming community in our classrooms where each student belongs, feels valued, and can work as a member of a group?

Facilitating Reading Workshops in the Classrooms

The network begins with two, 2-hour online sessions where participants will look at reading theory and the KEY strategies that support those theories as they play out in the classroom. The following two sessions hopefully, will be in-person with the mornings spent in a classroom where a range of processes and strategies will be demonstrated, with the afternoon devoted to debriefing the morning and determining how best  to use new learning in the participants’ own classrooms.  Special emphasis will be placed on the role of schema in comprehension and how it is more important than the right “level” when students are choosing books, and the importance of turning points in texts, and the ability of the reader to synthesize their understanding.

Throughout this network, the facilitator will cover topics such as the use of narrative poetry, short stories, memoirs, videos and how to implement sharing circles and reading workshop. The emphasis will be on reading as it applies to narrative text and with a constant eye on student engagement.

Facilitating Writing Workshops in the Classrooms

In these sessions, you will spend time learning, reflecting, discussing, and trying. Each session will leave you with a “try it tomorrow” component.

Through these sessions, participants will:

  • Develop and refine a structure for writing instruction

  • Gain insight into philosophical and practical approaches that have proven successful in getting many Middle Years students to increase their writing volume, engagement, and skillset

  • Have access to resources and sources to support writing engagement and instruction (that you can try the very next day)

  • Hear from students and look at real student work that captures a range of abilities (and that will likely capture the diversity within your own classrooms)

Planning Using the ELA Curriculum

This network will look at:

  • Designing activities that are engaging and are a reflection of students’ interest, strengths, needs and curiosities

  • Planning and designing Rich Learning Experiences while keeping the curriculum in mind

  • Assessment-evidence of learning-expectations/learning intentions and criteria building

Teachers will participate in this network with a partner from their school or the division. Each team will develop a rich learning experience together that can be carried out in their classrooms. These will also be shared with other members in the group, making a bank of Rich Learning Experiences for all participants in these sessions. Also, ways to collect evidence of learning will be explored for assessment.
