Leadership Learning Networks

Joy of Reading

Through this 4-part series, we will look at the structures and conditions to create joy in the reading classrooms. We will explore the following questions:

  • How can we create the conditions for joy in our classrooms?

  • Which resource books can we refer to in order to inform our instruction? Which mentor texts can we use to help build capacity in our students as readers?

  • How can we build the capacity for talk in our classrooms? How can we build a growth mindset and create a culture of risk taking to ensure our students can openly share their understandings and questions with each other?

  • How can we use the structure of literature circles to build and extend a shared understanding of books?

  • How can we assess students in a meaningful way? How can we involve them in the assessment process? How can we use feedback to enable our students to be able to set meaningful reading goals?

Note: All teachers participating in this network will also have online access to the recorded sessions of the network entitled Joy of Writing.

Joy of Writing

Through the four sessions, we will examine structures and activities that will help teachers discover and deepen their confidence and enthusiasm for teaching writing (and how this is reflected in their students). A combination of experiences from Amanda’s own classroom as well as participants’ will be used to look at ways that makes teaching writing worthwhile and enjoyable. Participants will engage in group discussions and come away with ideas to enhance the writing experience in their classrooms. At the end of each session, participants will leave with ideas to try in their own classrooms the next day.

Through these sessions, we will explore the following questions:

  • What makes writing enjoyable for both teacher and student?

  • What are routines, structures, and activities that have been proven to increase student engagement and skillsets?

  • How do we know “what’s working”?

  • How can we build capacity as skilled writers through engaging writing instruction and learning?

  • How can we assess students in meaningful ways? What role does feedback play? How can we involve students in this process?

Participants will also have access to resources to support engagement and instruction.

Note: All teachers participating in this network will also have online access to the recorded sessions of the network entitled Joy of Reading.

LITCURK-2 & LITCUR3-5

Planning Using the ELA Curriculum

This network will look at:

  • Introducing activities that are engaging and are a reflection of students’ interests, strengths, need and curiosities

  • Planning and designing Rich Learning Experiences while keeping the curriculum in mind

  • Assessment-evidence of learning expectations/learning intentions and criteria building

Teachers participating in this network will have the opportunity to collaborate and plan with others to develop a rich learning experience that can be carried out in their classrooms. The plans will also be collected and shared with all members of the network, making a bank of Rich Learning Experience units, lessons or ideas. Different ways to collect evidence of learning will also be explored for assessment and responsive teaching.

Participants will meet for four sessions throughout the year. Two of these will be full day

in-person sessions and two will be for 2-hour online sessions.

Teaching Reading K-3 In Diverse, Inclusive Classrooms

Beginning the first two sessions with Richard Allington and Rachel Gabriel’s framework from ‘Every Child, Every Day’, we will examine ‘what works’.  Their 6 strategies that each child should experience each day will be demonstrated in practical ways that you can immediately take back to the classroom and apply them. As teachers, we know that no two groups of children are the same.  With this in mind, you will learn how to use a class profile to better understand the strengths and stretches of your particular class.  This information will help organize for whole class, small group, and individual instruction and help set and monitor goals for reading.

In the third session, a model that includes all the elements of reading will be introduced.  We will focus on how to explicitly teach the component parts of reading – both word study and creating meaning.

In the fourth session, we reflect on our current classroom practice, examine our readers’ growth, and set goals and plans for the remainder of the year.  Some questions that could be considered include: Who needs more support?  What can this look like? What other whole class reading/writing sequences can I try?  How can I improve and include more 1:1 quick reading conferences?

Each participating teacher will receive a teacher resource book as well as several texts to use as read-alouds or mentor texts with your class.  Each division will have a half time K-3 literacy coach who will be available to collaborate with you on this initiative.
